This is the opportunity to experience the full progression together—from learning your first rhythms to becoming more confident playing as part of an ensemble.
Led by Djembe Fola Kam, adults and youth learn side by side through traditional West African rhythms, technique, call-and-response, listening, timing, and ensemble playing.
What You'll Build Together
Across eight Saturdays, you'll have opportunities to:
- Learn traditional West African rhythms
- Develop djembe technique and sound
- Strengthen timing and rhythmic confidence
- Practice call-and-response
- Develop listening and coordination
- Build endurance and consistency
- Strengthen ensemble skills
- Learn about the rhythms and cultural traditions connected to them
- Experience the progression that comes from practicing together consistently
No previous drumming experience is required.
From the Circle to the Stage
Participants who choose to perform will prepare for a culminating performance during the Kwanzaa season.
The full 8-week experience gives both adult and child time to learn, practice, develop confidence, find their places within the ensemble, and—if they choose—share what they've built on stage.
Learn. Practice. Build. Perform. Together.
Performance is completely optional.
