Youth Saturday Drum Camp | 8-Class Pass
Eight Saturdays. A full season to learn, practice, and grow.
Saturdays | 11:00 AM–12:00 PM
September 12–October 31, 2026
Empowerment Center | Portsmouth, VA
Your $110 investment includes the complete 8-week Youth Saturday Drum Camp experience.
The full-season pass gives youth something especially valuable: time to develop.
Instead of experiencing drumming once, they have eight Saturdays to learn rhythms, practice technique, strengthen listening and timing, build confidence, and discover what happens when individual players begin working together as an ensemble.
Led by Djembe Fola Kam, youth learn through traditional West African rhythms, repetition, call-and-response, cultural learning, and ensemble playing.
No previous drumming experience is required.
What They'll Build
Throughout the eight-week experience, youth will have opportunities to develop:
- Traditional West African rhythms
- Clear djembe technique and sound
- Timing and rhythmic confidence
- Listening and concentration
- Coordination and memory
- Call-and-response skills
- Consistency and endurance
- Ensemble awareness
- Cultural knowledge and connection
- Confidence through continued practice
From the Circle to the Stage
Youth who choose to perform will have the opportunity to prepare throughout the season for a culminating performance during the Kwanzaa season.
The eight-week experience gives them time to move from learning the rhythms to becoming comfortable playing them with the ensemble—and, if they choose, sharing what they've built on stage.
Learn. Practice. Build. Perform.
Performance is completely optional.
